Officially, this building by architect Renzo is called ‘The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center’, or Κέντρο Πολιτισμού Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος in Greek. The complex lies in the bay of Phaliron in Athens and besides the National Opera, it houses the National Library. The American landscape architect, Deborah Nevins, was in charge of the layout of the surrounding grounds. Her plans envisaged the planting of 300 heavy oriental sycamores. Initially, she could not get them in the required numbers, quality and size; that is until she came to Van den Berk Nurseries. In 2013, the trees were uprooted and transported to Greece, where they spent just over a year in airpots to prevent the stress of transplanting and to encourage root growth. During that period, the trees were pruned under the guidance of Van den Berk, which meant that in spite of the change in climate zone, there were scarcely any losses after planting.
